Penang’s tourism landscape is entering an exciting new chapter in 2026 with a series of high-profile hotel renovations and rebrandings that will strengthen the state’s appeal as a world-class travel destination.
One of Batu Ferringhi’s most recognisable beachfront resorts, Bayview Beach Resort Penang, is planning a strategic transformation. After completing a major acquisition by Oriental Holdings Berhad, the property will be reborn as Ascott Batu Ferringhi Penang — introducing the first flagship Ascott branded resort in a Malaysian beachfront location.
This repositioning underscores Penang’s status as a premier coastal destination for both regional and international travellers. Comprehensive renovations will elevate guest rooms, public spaces, ballrooms and the resort’s expansive pool areas to meet global standards. Work is expected to begin in 2026, with the new resort scheduled to open in early 2028.
Meanwhile in George Town’s UNESCO World Heritage district, the cherished Bayview Hotel Georgetown is set to undergo a full renovation and rebrand as Oakwood Georgetown Penang.

When it reopens, the property will offer refreshed designs that appeal to “bleisure” (business + leisure) travellers keen to explore heritage streets, local food culture and urban experiences.
These upgrades form part of a broader RM411 million strategic move by Oriental Holdings to expand its hospitality portfolio across Malaysia, with renovation investments for the Penang properties alone totaling well over RM200 million.
Not far away, the Bayview Hotel Langkawi in neighbouring Kedah is also transforming — rebranding as FOX Hotel Langkawi — signifying confidence in Malaysia’s leisure markets and catering to style-conscious travellers exploring Langkawi’s natural beauty.
This will also be the first Fox brand to debut in Langkawi too.
