Penang is attracting another Chinese airline to the Penang International Airport (PIA), further strengthening its air connectivity with the Chinese mainland and reinforcing its position as a leading tourism and business gateway in northern Malaysia.

This time around, Chongqing Airlines will commence its direct flight operations to Penang with effect from April 8, 2026, marking another important milestone in Penang’s aviation and tourism development.

The Chongqing airline’s all Airbus livery service will operate four times weekly, on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

The entry of Chongqing Airlines adds to the growing list of Chinese carriers offering direct access to the island state, reflecting strong travel demand and increasing confidence in Penang as a destination.

With this latest development, Penang is now served by multiple Chinese airlines operating direct flights from mainland China.

Among them are Xiamen Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Juneyao Airlines, Shanghai Airlines and Spring Airlines which have already established direct air links between China and Penang.

The addition of Chongqing Airlines further broadens Penang’s reach into China’s vast western hinterland, opening new opportunities for tourism, trade and people-to-people exchanges.

The continued expansion of direct air services from China would not be possible without the proactive efforts of the Penang State Tourism Office, under the leadership of YB Wong Hon Wai, and its tourism promotion arm, Penang Global Tourism (PGT), led by its CEO Ooi Chok Yan and his team.

Their sustained engagement with airlines, strategic route development initiatives, and targeted market promotions have played a pivotal role in attracting new carriers and strengthening existing routes.

The arrival of Chongqing Airlines also augurs well for Visit Malaysia Year 2026, as enhanced air connectivity remains a key driver in boosting international arrivals. China continues to be one of Malaysia’s most important source markets, and direct flights significantly improve accessibility, convenience, and destination appeal.

As Penang continues to welcome more airlines from China, the state is well-positioned to benefit from increased tourist arrivals, higher visitor spending, and stronger bilateral ties, further cementing its reputation as a vibrant, culturally rich, and globally connected destination.
