Merdeka and Malaysia Day specials at the Langkawi Kitchen

In honor of the upcoming Merdeka and Malaysia Day celebrations, the team at Langkawi Kitchen at The Ritz- Carlton, Langkawi is delighted to announce the launch of two exquisite set menus: “Nostalgia Kemerdekaan” and “Sejahtera Negaraku”.

These menus are crafted to evoke the essence of Malaysia’s rich cultural tapestry, paying tribute to iconic symbols such as the national football team, Harimau Malaya, and the national flag, Jalur Gemilang.

Every year, Malaysians honor two significant historical events: Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day. Merdeka Day, celebrated annually on 31st August, marks the pivotal moment when people from all walks of life come together to remember Malaysia’s independence in 1957. It is a time to contemplate the sacrifices made by past leaders and to celebrate unity amidst diversity.

On the other hand, Malaysia Day is commemorated on 16th September, marking the establishment of the Malaysian Federation in 1963, which brought together Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak, and Singapore which later separated in 1965.

This occasion signifies national unity, progress, and the essence of collaboration among Malaysians.

Given Malaysia’s abundance of fresh produce, spices, and herbs, along with being a cultural melting pot, it is no wonder that Malaysia’s share a passionate love of food due to the diverse culinary landscape. To honor our wonderful culinary heritage, Langkawi Kitchen proudly presents two set menus, Nostalgia Kemerdekaan and Sejahtera Negaraku.

Highlights from the sets include:

Cucur Udang Harimau Malaya – Crispy prawn fritters which are soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. Made with fresh tiger prawns from our Andaman Sea, fresh chives and bean sprouts, served with a zesty Thai-style dipping sauce, highlighting our commitment to using local ingredients and supporting our community of suppliers. The name was inspired by Malaysia’s national football team, Harimau Malaya. It pays homage to Malaysian pride and sporting achievements, celebrating unity through shared national symbols.

Merdeka Gold Cup – Telang rice is infused with fragrant herbs from local farms and homemade vegan floss. “Merdeka” means independence in Malay and this dish celebrates the journey towards independence and the ongoing pursuit of self-sufficiency and sustainable practices in modern times.

Kacang Botol Tumis Vegan – The dish bursts with vibrant flavors and colors, offering a delightful combination of textures. The winged beans, crisp and fresh, are perfectly complemented by the rich, savory vegan shrimp paste, which adds depth of flavor to this vegan dish.

A Famosa Cendol Panna Cotta – A modern take on the classic Malaysian dessert, using pandan-flavored green rice flour jelly, coconut cream, and palm syrup sourced locally. The name was inspired by A Famosa, now one of the most famous places in Melaka. A Famosa which means ‘The Famous’ in Portuguese, is one of the oldest surviving European forts in Asia. While all that remains of this once mighty fortress is the gate called the Porta de Santiago, it is still an icon of Melaka, which is also renowned for its local delicacies like cendol. Cendol is a shaved iced sweet dessert that contains droplets of pandan-flavoured green rice flour jelly, coconut milk and palm sugar syrup.

Join us with your loved ones to savor these classic Malaysian dishes together and celebrate the spirit of Malaysia.
