The flood mitigation project at Sungai Pinang is progressing steadily, with 27% of the work completed as of now.
The federally funded initiative, aimed at reducing flood risks in one of Penang’s most flood-prone areas, is expected to be completed by 2027.
The progress update was shared by Penang Deputy Chief Minister II, YB Jagdeep Singh Deo—who also serves as the State Assemblyman for Datuk Keramat—during a site walkabout at Lorong Kulit on the morning of July 12.
“I would like to thank Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the federal government for prioritising this critical flood mitigation project, which will benefit the residents of Sungai Pinang and Datuk Keramat,” said Jagdeep.
“This area has long been recognised—both locally and nationally—as being highly susceptible to flash floods. The comprehensive scope of this project reflects its importance. It stretches from Ayer Itam through the low-lying zones of Sungai Pinang, and continues all the way to the river mouth leading to the open sea,” he explained.
Jagdeep expressed confidence that the project remains on schedule and will be completed as planned. He also reiterated the state government’s commitment to supporting infrastructure projects that enhance public safety and climate resilience.
Once completed, the Sungai Pinang flood mitigation project is expected to significantly reduce the frequency and severity of flooding in the area, improving the quality of life for thousands of residents and strengthening Penang’s climate adaptation efforts.
