Penang Chief Minister YAB Chow Kon Yeow has tabled a RM1.088 billion state budget for 2026, marking the lowest deficit in its history at just RM19.92 million yesterday.
Revenue is expected to rise to about RM1.068 billion, reflecting strong financial footing and improved fiscal management.
The budget prioritises infrastructure, community amenities, and long-term development.
Major allocations support the Mutiara Line LRT land acquisition, Gurney Bay Phase 2, Penang Silicon Island, and other projects under the Penang Transport Master Plan. A total of 122 development projects will continue into 2026.
For tourism, while no major standalone allocation was announced, several development items directly strengthen Penang’s appeal: upgrades to Penang Hill, expansion of the state museum and art gallery, and the transformation of Gurney Bay into a major waterfront attraction. Improved mobility from transport projects is expected to enhance visitor experience.
Overall, the 2026 budget underscores Penang’s strategy of pairing fiscal discipline with high-impact development, positioning the state for stronger economic activity, improved liveability, and sustainable tourism growth.
Chow also celebrated his 67th birthday by performing a cake cutting ceremony at the State Assembly.
Happy birthday CM !
