The Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives YB Steven Sim who is also the Member of Parliament or Bukit Mertajam hailed the Bukit Mertajam Hospital on its proud achievement of being listed among the World’s 250 Greenest Hospitals 2026, as ranked by Newsweek and Statista.
“I would like to extend my highest congratulations and commendations to all members of Hospital Bukit Mertajam (HBM).
“This achievement is especially meaningful as HBM is the only hospital from Malaysia to be included in this prestigious group. It is not only a recognition of HBM, but also puts the name of Bukit Mertajam and Malaysia on the world stage.
“This success is the result of the continuous efforts and commitment of HBM’s staff, led by Dr. Prashant a/l Subramanian, in developing a sustainable healthcare system. In 2025, HBM won the Gold Award in the “Most Sustainable Hospital 2025” category for its entry, “Pioneering 135 Years of Eco-Friendly Healthcare: HBM’s Journey Towards Becoming a Sustainable Hospital.”
He added that the competition received 399 entries from 140 hospitals across 14 Asian countries, covering 10 different categories.
“Following its recognition at the Asian level in 2025, HBM has now gone a step further by receiving recognition at the global level in 2026. This demonstrates that its continued efforts in sustainability, efficiency and environmentally friendly healthcare have produced truly commendable results.
“As the Member of Parliament for Bukit Mertajam, I have always believed that our hospital must be given the necessary support and resources to continuously improve the quality of services provided to the people. Since 2023, my office has worked to secure government resources for the development of HBM, including:
- RM200,000 for the Public Toilet Upgrading Project (2023)
- RM50,000 for the Eye Clinic (2024)
- RM5 million for CT Scan facilities (2025), through an allocation from the Ministry of Finance
“Each of these allocations has enabled the doctors, nurses and entire HBM team to provide better services to the people of Bukit Mertajam.
“I, together with YB Daniel Gooi, Penang EXCO for Youth, Sports and Health, am also working with Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad, Minister of Health of Malaysia, to further upgrade HBM,” said Sim in a press statement.
He also congratulated the entire Hospital Bukit Mertajam community, including all healthcare workers and everyone involved in advancing the hospital’s sustainability agenda.
