German cruise ship AIDAdiva made its inaugural visit to the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal yesterday morning.
The Sphinx‑class vessel berthed with approximately 2,000 passengers and 650 crew members, many of whom disembarked to explore George Town, bringing a timely and welcome boost to Penang’s tourism economy.
To celebrate the ship’s inaugural visit, the Penang Port Commission arranged a special Malaysian cultural dance performance to greet guests ashore. The warm reception reflects Penang’s hospitality and the strong collaboration between port and tourism stakeholders in showcasing the island’s living heritage to international visitors.
The German luxury cruise ship was built by Meyer Werft in Germany and is renowned for its distinctive “kiss‑lips” hull design and its youthful, relaxed German cruising concept.
Featuring signature attractions such as the Theatrium theatre and cocktail venues, the vessel is typically deployed in European and Caribbean waters; this maiden call to Penang represents an important addition to the island’s cruise calendar.

AIDA Cruises is one of Germany’s leading cruise brands and is noted for integrating cycling tours into its shore excursions, providing bicycles and guided rides that allow guests to experience destinations up close.
In support of this initiative, the Penang Port Commission invited the cruise line’s cycling tour planning team to conduct a site inspection by bicycle, following a route from Swettenham Pier through the Esplanade and past heritage landmarks including City Hall, the High Court and Harmony Street.
The Commission looks forward to working with Tourism Malaysia to develop distinctive low‑carbon itineraries that pair cruise calls with cycling experiences, enhancing sustainable tourism offerings for Penang.
Present to receive the Captain and the crew of the ship was Penang Port Commission Chairman Dato Yeoh Soon Hin who is also the Deputy Chairman of Tourism Malaysia.
