In celebration of the upcoming Mooncake Festival, The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi is excited to announce two tantalizing mooncakes, carefully crafted by the culinary maestros at Hai Yan, Langkawi’s only modern Chinese restaurant.
Led by executive Chinese chef, Chef Wang Can Hua who hails from Zhengzhou, China, legends are reinvented in edible form, with the light of the moon symbolized by the Lava Salted Egg Custard Mooncake and the decadent Valrhona Chocolate Custard Lava Mooncake representing the mortar used by the Jade Rabbit.
Hai Yan’s multitalented dim sum chef J. Jay brings back these crowd-pleasing favorites.
With the belief that exceptional mooncakes are made with only the finest and freshest ingredients, Chef Wang and the Hai Yan team take pride in being involved in every step, from sourcing ingredients to creating them in-house, for a memorable gastronomic experience.
The Mooncake Festival, also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival, is an ancient festival celebrated by the Chinese diaspora, whereby friends and families gather and present each other with mooncakes that symbolize unity and the joy of togetherness. In line with the resort’s tagline “A Legend Reinvented”, the mystical tale of the goddess Chang’e and the Jade Rabbit inspired the creation of this year’s mooncakes.
The Legend of Chang’e is about a skilled archer named Hou Yi who saved humanity by shooting down nine suns, which were scorching the earth and its people. Hou Yi received the elixir of immortality from the Queen Mother of the West as a reward for his bravery, but didn’t consume it as he didn’t want to be immortal without Chang’e.
He passed it to her for safekeeping, but Chang’e had to swallow the elixir to protect it from a treacherous apprentice who wanted it, and as a result, she ascended into the sky and became the Goddess of the Moon. Hou Yi was heartbroken after hearing of Chang’e sacrifice, and after seeing a shape on the moon that looked like Chang’e, he displayed her favorite fruits and cakes, to show her he missed her. Touched by their love, the Mother of the Moon allowed them to reunite every Mid-Autumn. The Jade Rabbit is a divine creature who helps to prepare the elixir of immortality, living on the moon with Chang’e.
Lava Salted Egg Custard Mooncake – As luminous as the light of the moon, the delectable Lava Salted Egg Custard combines the crowd-pleasing flavor of salted egg, which oozes out like lava from this artisanal mooncake. The perfect blend of sweet and savory, it echoes the mystical tale of Chang’e ascent to the moon.
Valrhona Chocolate Custard Lava Mooncake – For chocolate enthusiasts or guests who prefer something a little sweeter, the exquisite Valrhona Chocolate Custard Lava mooncake awaits. The delicate outer crust beautifully contrasts the rich and smooth Valrhona chocolate lava filling. Inspired by the legendary mortar used by the Jade Rabbit, each bite of this delectable delight will leave guests utterly enchanted.
Available for takeaway and dine-in (only the Valrhona Chocolate Custard Lava Mooncake), Hai Yan’s mooncakes are made fresh and require at least 48-hours advance booking.
Guests who walk-in can purchase them from August 15, 2024 to September 15, 2024. Each box is priced at RM148 each and contains four mooncakes, presented in an elegant red case that can also be used as a bag afterwards.
