Penang’s hotel industry is poised for a new era of growth and reinvention — with several high-profile international hotels scheduled to open in 2026, vastly expanding the island’s accommodation offerings.
InterContinental debuts in Penang – The former Mutiara Beach Resort in Teluk Bahang is being transformed into InterContinental Penang Resort (under the global IHG Hotels & Resorts group), scheduled for soft launch in late 2026. The renovation — already well underway — aims to rejuvenate the resort as a five-star beachfront destination, complete with 355 rooms and suites, six private villas, multiple swimming pools (including a kids’ pool), five dining outlets, and a full-service wellness village featuring 10 treatment villas, a yoga studio and a relaxation pavilion.
Ideally located just 30 minutes from central George Town, the resort will offer guests easy access to the Teluk Bahang fishing village, the nearby national park, and the region’s serene coastal and nature attractions. With its private-villa enclave and family-friendly as well as romantic-getaway offerings, InterContinental Penang aims to redefine luxury beach tourism on the island.
Work is that the general manager has already been appointed for the resort. More appointments for the various heads of departments are expected gradually – signalling a serious push to ensure the rebranded resort meets global standards from day-one.
A Surge of New Hotels: From Heritage-Inspired to Skyline Landmarks
InterContinental’s comeback will be complemented by a wave of new hotels, each bringing distinct character and appeal:
- Capri by Fraser Penang — A 248-unit lifestyle hotel on Magazine Road, blending contemporary design with Penang’s Peranakan heritage. The development preserves a row of heritage shophouses for its lobby, restaurant and café, while offering modern amenities like a 24-hour gym, all-day dining, rooftop event space, and Capri’s signature “Spin & Play” social and laundry/games lounge. Capri by Fraser is slated to open in the first quarter of 2026.
- The Westin Hotel, Penang — Rising along the iconic Gurney Drive seafront, this 217-room hotel forms part of a larger “Hotel & Residences” development. Scheduled to open in 2026, The Westin will deliver sweeping sea views over the Andaman Sea, direct access to new public green spaces like Gurney Bay Park, and world-class leisure facilities including its signature Heavenly® Bed, outdoor pool, spa, fitness studio and family-friendly amenities.
- JdV by Hyatt Penang & Galaxy Minyoun Hotel Penang — As part of the ambitious seafront mixed-use development The Light City by IJM Perennial, the two hotels are slated to open in the third quarter of 2026. The JdV by Hyatt will feature 156 rooms with a boutique, design-forward feel, while Galaxy Minyoun will offer 303 rooms targeting travellers seeking comfort and value. Together they bring over 450 hotel rooms to a growing, integrated lifestyle district that includes retail, offices, and entertainment venues — complete with 5G-ready infrastructure, easy access to the sea, and proximity to the new event space at the adjacent convention centre.
- Marriott Penang Queens Waterfront – The new 5-star hotel to be located in Bayan Lepas will offer 262-rooms and feature top notch room categories, suites and other facilities for guests. Meanwhile, the Marriott Residences Queens Waterfront Penang will offer 228 units.
- Le Meridien Penang Airport – The hotel will offer 200 rooms, a Presidential suite, a 300-capacity ballroom, a sky infinity pool, all-day dining outlets and world-class amenities tailored for business and leisure travelers. The project is undertaken by the Rackson Group. The service apartments will offer 608 units in one, two and three-bedded configurations catering for diverse needs. The project will feature an infinity swimming pool with panoramic views, a multipurpose hall, a state-of-art gymnasium and a sky lounge.
- HARRIS Hotels & Conventions Sunshine Penang features 289 rooms, extensive meeting and event spaces, and amenities such as a swimming pool, a 24-hour gym, and an all-day dining restaurant.
- Other standalone hotels include the Hompton Bayan Lepas which is fast reaching the final stages of completion.
- What This Means for Penang’s Tourism & MICE Appeal – Industry analysts expect Penang’s hotel-room supply to grow by roughly 4,000 rooms between 2025 and 2026 — a substantial expansion reflecting growing confidence in the island’s tourism, leisure, and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, exhibitions) potential.
This surge will provide visitors with a remarkable diversity of stay options — from heritage-inspired city stays and beach resorts to design-centric boutique hotels and modern integrated-city accommodations. Whether you are a leisure traveller seeking culture and seaside serenity, a business traveller needing convenient amenities and connectivity, or an investor tracking property and tourism trends — Penang’s hospitality landscape is undergoing a dynamic transformation.
Yet with rapid growth comes challenges: market watchers caution that influxes of new hotel supply and rising operating costs may create short-term pressure on occupancy rates and room pricing during off-peak periods.
A New Dawn for the Island’s Hospitality Sector – With the re-birth of InterContinental Penang Resort, the debut of Capri by Fraser, The Westin, JdV by Hyatt and Galaxy Minyoun — all set within the next 18–24 months — Penang is positioning itself as a top-tier destination for travellers seeking both luxury and lifestyle variety. Combined with improved infrastructure, expanding air connectivity, and the rising profile of MICE events and medical tourism, the island looks ready to welcome a new era of tourism.
For stakeholders in travel, real estate, and hospitality — the coming years promise opportunity, growth and evolution.
