The Sunway Carnival Mall has become the first mall in the Northern Region to set up a dedicated “Autism Calm Room” and the “Sensory Wall” to benefit those children inflicted with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
The trend setting launching ceremony was also in conjunction with the month of April which marks Autism Awareness month.
The commendable deed is in line with Sunway group’s dedication to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG #12 which focuses on Responsible Consumption and Production.
Meanwhile, the Calm Room is located on the 2nd floor of the mall and offers a safe and quiet space designed specifically to benefit kids and individuals with the disorder.
The initiative aims to provide a safe place for individuals with ASD to decompress and calm down when feeling overwhelmed or overstimulated.
It is equipped with a wide range of sensory tools and resources, including comfortable seating, sensory toys with dimmed lighting, all designed to create a calming and welcoming environment,
It should be mentioned that the launch of the Calm Room is a milestone for the Sunway Carnival Mall as they strive to be an autism friendly mall and to promote inclusion and understanding of individuals with autism in the community.
The mall is also credited with creating charming mini lamp shades using upcycled cans collected from their Food & Beverage tenants.
“By transforming waste into art, we celebrate life amidst a colourful display, while also promoting the idea of waste reduction,” said Chai Wen Yew, general manager of the Sunway Carnival Mall.
Among those present was Tourism Malaysia Northern Region director Shahrul Aman, his deputy Siti Hajar and media members.
These forward looking measures will surely serve as a valuableĀ resource for families and individuals afflicted with ASD.
