The Penang International Airport will welcome direct chartered flights from Poland come this November.
The good news was shared by State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy YB Wong Hon Wai.
“In a significant step towards strengthening Penang’s presence in the European market, a special VIP familiarisation (FAM) trip from Poland was successfully held from 17 to 20 April 2026, marking a key milestone in preparations for the state’s first-ever winter charter flight programme from Poland.
“The delegation, comprising 41 participants, was led by the CEO of Rainbow Tours, alongside company owners and top-selling partner agents. This exclusive visit formed part of ongoing efforts to deepen strategic partnerships, enhance destination understanding, and drive future sales to Penang.
“Rainbow Tours, one of Poland’s leading tour operators, has consistently contributed to Malaysia’s tourism growth by bringing in numerous group series from the Polish market. Building on this strong foundation, the company is now set to expand its Malaysia portfolio by positioning Penang as a key destination for the upcoming winter season,” said Wong in his press statement.
He added that from 26 November 2026 to 27 March 2027, Rainbow Tours will operate a weekly direct charter flight from Poland to Penang over a four-month period of winter season.

“This chartered flight service is expected to bring thousands of Polish and European tourists to Penang. This initiative represents the first-ever direct charter flight from Poland to Penang, marking a breakthrough in accessibility and market development.
“The introduction of direct connectivity is set to be a game changer, significantly reducing travel barriers and enhancing Penang’s appeal as a convenient and competitive destination in Southeast Asia. It also strengthens Penang’s position as a preferred winter sun destination, aligning with seasonal travel demand from Europe.
“Poland is an emerging outbound market with strong growth potential, characterised by longer average stays, a preference for curated group travel, and higher spending on cultural experiences. The anticipated influx of visitors is expected to generate substantial economic benefits across Penang’s tourism ecosystem, including accommodation, food and beverage, transportation, attractions, and local SMEs.
“This charter initiative also reflects Penang’s broader strategy to diversify its source markets, particularly in light of evolving global travel dynamics. In response to the challenges posed by uncertainties in the West Asian market, Penang is proactively pivoting and forging ahead with determination, carving out new paths to diversify its tourist source markets. By strengthening its footprint in Central and Eastern Europe, Penang enhances its resilience and reduces reliance on traditional markets,” said Wong.

He also said that beyond immediate arrivals, the programme is poised to deliver long-term benefits by strengthening Penang’s visibility within European travel trade networks and paving the way for potential future scheduled services or extended charter operations.
LOT Polish Airlines operates its Boeing 787 for its long haul routes with a capacity of 200-330 passengers depending on its configuration. The airline had recently flown direct flights to Langakwi thus boosting the local tourism industry.
