Penang will take center stage on the global map as it plays host to the 18th Congress of the World Federation of Hainanese Associations, set to take place from November 14 to 16 at the Setia SPICE Convention Centre.
The prestigious triennial event is expected to welcome over 2,000 delegates from nearly 20 countries and regions, including China’s Hainan Province, Hong Kong, Macau, Taipei, Singapore, Brunei, Thailand, Indonesia, the United States and Australia.
Announcing the event at a press conference was Penang State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy, YB Wong Hon Wai, alongside Ashwin Gunasekeran, CEO of the Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB).
They were joined by top leaders of the Hainanese community, including Datuk Yong Ket How, President of The Federation Of Hainan Association Malaysia, and several other key figures.
“This is more than just a conference—it’s a celebration of cultural heritage and a powerful homecoming for the global Hainanese community,” said Wong. “Penang and Hainan share historical ties dating back to the 19th century, when Hainanese migrants first settled here and helped shape the economic and social landscape of our state.”

Wong also highlighted the formalisation of bilateral ties, including a 2013 MOU between Penang State and Hainan Province, followed by a 2017 agreement establishing a friendly city relationship between Penang Island and Sanya City.
“The selection of Penang as host for this world congress reflects the deep and lasting bonds between our two regions. It also marks a new chapter of collaboration in tourism, culture, and economic development,” he added.
Ashwin noted that the congress is one of the largest association gatherings in Penang this year, and a landmark event for the state’s MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) industry.
“This congress connects diaspora communities, entrepreneurs, and professionals. We’re expecting high-impact forums on business, law, youth, and women, creating cross-border opportunities especially within the ASEAN region,” said Ashwin.

“Our journey to bring this event to Penang began in 2023—and we’re thrilled to see it become a reality.” he added.
The Penang State Government is working closely with the event organizers to ensure a successful congress, which is expected to significantly benefit the local tourism and hospitality sectors.
