The Penang Port Commission (PPC) proudly celebrated its 70th anniversary in a gala hi-tea held at the iconic Eastern & Oriental Hotel (E&O Hotel) in George Town, commemorating seven decades of service in shaping Penang’s maritime and trade landscape.
The celebration was graced by the guest of honour, Transport Minister YB Anthony Loke Siew Fook, who was welcomed by PPC Chairman Dato’ Yeoh Soon Hin and the commission’s management team.
Also in attendance were several State Assemblymen, industry stakeholders and Consul Generals stationed in Penang, reflecting the strong partnership between government, private sector and international representatives.

Founded in 1956 under the Penang Port Commission Act, the PPC has served as the regulatory authority and administrator for port activities in the northern region of Malaysia. Over the years, it has overseen the expansion and governance of port facilities, licensing, marine safety, and the promotion of Penang Port as a strategic maritime gateway.
In his address, Minister Anthony Loke highlighted the pivotal role of Penang Port not just in regional trade, but also as a growing hub for cruise tourism and economic connectivity.
“Penang Port will continue to receive attention and undergo development,” said Loke, underscoring the government’s commitment to evolving the port from its traditional transshipment role into one that also supports broader maritime services and economic activities in the northern region. “This will strengthen the national maritime ecosystem and expand local economic spillovers as we build a more vibrant and competitive gateway for trade and tourism.”

He also highlighted the role PPC has played in promoting cruise tourism.
The anniversary event also comes amid ongoing efforts to enhance Penang’s waterfront and port precinct, including plans to leverage the strategic position of the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal — the only cruise facility in Malaysia located within a city-heritage zone — as part of wider urban and tourism revitalisation initiatives.
The PPC’s 70-year milestone celebrates both its historical legacy and its future vision, reinforcing its mission to ensure smooth port operations, promote maritime growth, facilitate trade and strengthen Penang’s role as a vital hub in Malaysia’s port network.
