The newly opened four-lane coastal road linking the Gurney Drive roundabout to Andaman Island is fast becoming more than just a transport link — it has evolved into a mini tourism attraction for Penangites and visitors alike.

Stretching out into the sea, the road offers users uninterrupted views of the Andaman Island and the open sea, making the drive itself an experience.

Especially during sunrise and sunset, the scenic coastal panorama has drawn residents who now make leisure drives to Andaman Island, turning the route into a popular spot for casual sightseeing, photography, and evening outings.

Beyond its visual appeal, the new road has significantly improved connectivity across the island.

Residents from Batu Ferringhi, Teluk Bahang, Tanjung Bungah and Tanjong Tokong are increasingly using the route as a convenient shortcut to George Town.

By bypassing multiple traffic lights and congested inner-city roads, the coastal drive provides a smoother and more efficient alternative, particularly during peak hours.

The improved access has also enhanced Andaman Island’s appeal as an emerging residential and commercial destination. Once accessible mainly by limited routes, the reclaimed island can now be reached easily by car, encouraging more locals to explore the area and supporting future tourism,
dining, and recreational developments planned for the waterfront.

Urban planners and tourism observers note that such infrastructure plays a crucial role in shaping travel behaviour. Roads designed with both functionality and experience in mind can become attractions in their own right, contributing to a city’s lifestyle appeal.

The Gurney Drive–Andaman Island link reflects Penang’s broader push towards integrating mobility, urban development, and tourism.

As Penang continues to balance growth with liveability, the new coastal road stands as an example of how infrastructure can enhance daily commuting while creating new spaces for leisure and discovery. For many Penangites, the journey across the sea has become just as enjoyable as the destination itself.

Penang Chief Minister YAB Chow Kon Yeow officiated the opening of the new link to Andaman Island on Dec 12, 2025.

Chow highlighted that while the structure may appear to be “just a bridge,” it carries far greater significance for Penang.

“This bridge represents a major step forward in connectivity, good planning and the future we are building together,” he said.

“From my office window in KOMTAR, I have watched the Andaman shoreline grow day by day. Seeing that progress turn into reality today is truly meaningful.”

Chow added that the Andaman development is among the region’s most ambitious township projects, and that the new bridge seamlessly links the well-known Gurney Drive to a modern, emerging community on Andaman Island.
