The Andaman Island–Gurney Bridge was officially opened early this morning by Penang Chief Minister YAB Chow Kon Yeow, providing motorists with a convenient new alternative route to and from Andaman Island.
Also present at the ceremony were Deputy Chief Minister II YB Jagdeep Singh Deo, State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy YB Wong Hon Wai, Datuk Seri Sundarajoo, Dato’ Seri Tee Eng Ho, the Executive Chairman and Board of Directors of Eastern & Oriental Berhad, Eastern & Oriental Berhad managing director Kok Tuck Cheong along with a host of guests.
In his speech, Chow highlighted that while the structure may appear to be “just a bridge,” it carries far greater significance for Penang.
“This bridge represents a major step forward in connectivity, good planning, and the future we’re building together,” he said. “From my office window in KOMTAR, I’ve watched the Andaman shoreline grow day by day. Seeing that progress turn into reality today is truly meaningful.”
Chow added that the Andaman development is among the region’s most ambitious township projects, and that the new bridge seamlessly links the well-known Gurney Drive to a modern, emerging community on Andaman Island.

Earlier, Dato’ Seri Tee Eng Ho expressed his appreciation to the State Government for its support. He noted that the 1.2 km eight-lane bridge, complete with pedestrian walkways on both sides, is designed to enhance accessibility and ease of movement for motorists and residents. The Andaman Island township, he added, will offer a wide range of residential, lifestyle, and service amenities.
The event concluded with Chow and other VIPs performing the ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially mark the opening of the bridge.
