Media statement by Dato’ Brian Tan – Chairman MICCI Northern Branch
The Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI) Northern Chapter strongly contests the recent narrative of weak tourist arrivals in Langkawi over the Malaysia Day holidays. Our own observations, supported by hoteliers, ferry operators and local businesses, show that occupancy and activity were robust across the island, with healthy demand among quality tourists.
We further note relatable testimonies shared on social media, reflecting the vibrancy of Langkawi during the long weekend. An Instagram video by Alif Aiman from the Telaga Group Langkawi showcased bustling activity across the island, while a TikTok video by @homestaylangkawiummi (16 September) highlighted long queues and large crowds at the Langkawi Cable Car. These real-world accounts stand in clear contrast to recent negative reporting.

Local stakeholders also echo these sentiments:
“The recent headlines don’t reflect our experience. Both our resorts experienced high occupancy over the Malaysia Day weekend. I believe Langkawi continues to attract discerning travellers who spend more and value unique experiences.” – Amran Ahmed, Ambong-Ambong
“We should also accept that Langkawi has upped its game in an evolved market. Our corporate event groups are now spending 2 to 5 times more per head and selecting premium options, compared to just 5 years ago.” – Vinsen Chin, Event Organiser
Langkawi today is focused on positioning itself as a premier destination for authentic experiences, nature, wellness, and meaningful stays. MICCI remains devoted to promoting this vision, ensuring communication about Langkawi’s recovery and tourism performance remains grounded in facts.
We call upon policymakers and media stakeholders to recognise the positive developments in Langkawi and to support its continued transformation into a world-class destination.
