The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) is a shining example of what one can do with discarded materials.
As the saying goes, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, they have managed to utilise items like plastic bottles, plastic bottle caps, cardboard, wires, old tyres, PVC and many more items to make this year’s Hari Raya decoration on the third floor of Komtar.
One can find a setting of a kampung house, bamboo lemang, miriam buluh, ducks, human figurines, lampu pelita, kuali all made from discarded materials.
On hand to launch the event was State Exco for Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning, Jagdeep Singh Deo accompanied by Penang Mayor Dato Yew Tung Seng.
The six-man team who worked on the project was led by Ahmad Nizuar Nordin and Xavier Sebastian, Deputy Director of Urban Services Department.
“It is indeed a refreshing sight to see that these materials are put to creative use which will otherwise end up in the rubbish dump.
“I would like to congratulate MBPP on their green initiative in line with the state’s green initiatives. Syabas to them,” said Jagdeep.
“The team took two weeks to prepare the decorations and only worked on the project after our normal working hours.
“The Hari Raya decorations will be on display till one month after Hari Raya celebrations,” said Nizuar.
He also added that their next project will be for the Merdeka decorations using recycled materials again.
In the meantime, Jagddep again reminded members of the public to strictly follow all of the SOPs with regards to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We have to be firm to be firm to be fair,” said Jagdeep.
