The Bayview Hotel Georgetown closed its doors yesterday, marking the end of an era as it prepares for a major renovation and rebranding exercise.
For generations of staff, the hotel was far more than just a workplace. It became a second home where lifelong friendships were forged, careers blossomed and countless memories were created. Many devoted decades of service to the hotel, welcoming guests from around the world while sharing special moments with colleagues who eventually became family.
Since opening its doors in 1986, Bayview Hotel Georgetown has been a familiar landmark in the heart of George Town. It has hosted weddings, celebrations, business events and reunions, while its iconic Three Sixty Revolving Restaurant and Sky Bar, the Carmen Club became cherished venues for both locals and visitors.
Through changing times, the hotel remained a symbol of Penang’s warm hospitality and enduring charm.
For 40 years, Bayview Hotel Georgetown stood proudly as one of Penang’s most recognisable landmarks, welcoming generations of guests while quietly becoming a second home to hundreds of employees too.
Over the years, the hotel was led by several respected general managers, including Derrick Tan, Lawrence Perera and Lynne Choong, each contributing to its legacy and growth.
As the lights dim on this chapter, many former and current employees bid farewell with a mixture of gratitude and nostalgia, reflecting on the friendships, experiences and unforgettable moments that defined their years at Bayview.
Following its extensive refurbishment, the property is expected to return with a new identity as Oakwood Georgetown Penang, ushering in a fresh chapter while preserving the spirit and legacy of one of Penang’s most recognisable hotels.
The writer himself had stayed at the hotel for two long stints of one month each. First in 2001 when being transferred from Ipoh and on the second occasion when transferred from Kuala Lumpur in 2010.
