Penang State Executive Councillor for Housing and Environment, Dato’ Seri S. Sundarajoo, recently carried out his “Back to School” Programme to assist underprivileged students in his constituency of Perai.
The initiative was designed as an early support measure to help ease the financial burden faced by families as the new school term begins, ensuring that students are able to start the academic year with greater confidence, comfort, and ease of mind.
A total of 250 students benefited from the programme, receiving school vouchers worth RM150 each. The assistance involved students from eight schools in the Perai area, with an overall allocation amounting to RM37,500.
The selection of recipients was conducted in close cooperation with school authorities, based on genuine needs. This approach reflects the Penang State Government’s commitment to fairness, transparency, and accountability in the implementation of welfare initiatives.

As a member of the Penang State Executive Council and the elected representative for KADUN Perai, Sundarajoo reaffirmed that all welfare programmes introduced by the state government are intended for the benefit of all citizens, regardless of race, religion or background.
He emphasized that education is a fundamental right of every child, and that it is a shared responsibility of the government, the community and parents to safeguard this right. The Penang State Government, he said, remains steadfast in supporting initiatives that bring direct benefits to the people, particularly those aimed at nurturing a knowledgeable and competitive future generation.
“The children we see today represent the greatest investment for both the state and the nation,” he added. “Education is not merely a pathway to academic success, but also the foundation for character building, discipline, and strong human values.”
He also expressed hope that the assistance, though modest in value, would serve as a source of motivation for students to continue striving, studying diligently, and pursuing their aspirations. He also took the opportunity to express his appreciation to parents and guardians who consistently do their best for their children despite the many challenges they face.
