China’s Xiamen Airlines resumed its direct flights from Penang to Xiamen every Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays to further provide connectivity for travellers between the two cities.
Penang State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy YB Wong Hon Wai and other tourism stakeholders on hand to welcome the airline.
Also present was Xiamen Airlines senior sales manager, Li Chang Zhou.
The resumption is in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Xiamen-Penang Sister City relationship,
At a welcoming ceremony at the Penang International Airport, Xiamen Airlines flight MF8705 was given a water salute while the passengers were presented by goody bags accompanied by a traditional troupe.

In his address, Wong hailed the resumption of the flight to an ever growing tourism and hospitality sector in the state.
“China has always held a special place in the heart of Penang, serving as a vital market for our beautiful state long before the outbreak of the global pandemic.
“This year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of sister cities between Xiamen and Penang, a relationship that has promoted cultural exchange, economic development, and advancements in education, among other facets of our shared journey.

Meanwhile, Xiamen Airlines started in 1984 with its headquarters seated in Xiamen City of Fujian Province on the southeast coast of China. It was China’s first airline company operated under the modern enterprise system.
As of December 2022, the fleet size is 210. Xiamen Airlines operates more than 400 domestic and international routes. It serves nearly 40 million passengers annually, with over 16 million passengers joining in the Xiamen Airlines Frequent Flyer Program.
In the future, Xiamen Airlines will continue to fulfill its mission of “take more people to explore the world”. While maintaining their existing advantages, they will focus on transformation and innovation, expanding the navigation service chain and mass customer base, and building a regional network.
