Once largely dominated by men, senior commercial leadership in Penang’s hospitality industry is undergoing a noticeable transformation, with women increasingly taking on Director of Sales and Marketing (DOSM) and Director of Commercial roles.

The growing presence of women in senior commercial leadership is evident across Penang’s hospitality industry, where many Director of Sales and Marketing (DOSM) and Director of Commercial positions are now held by women.

A quick survey conducted by Penang Hyperlocal reveals a strong female presence across some of the island’s leading hotels, reflecting the growing influence of women in shaping the commercial and branding strategies of the tourism and hospitality sector.

From luxury beachfront resorts to international city hotels, women are increasingly taking the lead in driving revenue, brand positioning, partnerships and guest engagement in a highly competitive market.

Among the notable female DOSMs and commercial leaders in Penang are Doris Hor of Amari SPICE Penang, Choo Chan Chan of Eastin Hotel Penang, Lily Loo of Penang Marriott Hotel and Priscilla Khoo of Eastern & Oriental Hotel.

Also making their mark are Kanaga Siva from G Hotel, Jessica Chan of The Light Hotel Penang as their EAM, Catherine Ooi at the Iconic Marjorie Hotel and Chan Phei Ling of Neo+ Hotel Penang.

The list continues with Mei Wong of Lone Pine Penang, Feon Lee from The Prestige Hotel Penang, Quah Lin Lin of Cititel Penang, Stephanie Khor from Sunway Hotel Georgetown/Sunway Hotel Seberang Jaya  and Shirley Teo of Courtyard by Marriott Penang.

Other prominent names include Angelyna Radhi of HARRIS Sunshine Hotel & Conventions Sunshine Penang, Adelene Tan from Hard Rock Hotel Penang, Chan Wei Wei of Royale Chulan Penang and Michelle Azcona of M Social Resort Penang.

While the segment is clearly dominated by women, there remain a few notable male counterparts in similar leadership roles. They include David Soo at the Hompton Hotel Penang, Ivan Boo from St. Giles Wembley Penang and Ernest Loi of JEN Penang Georgetown by Shangri-La.

Industry observers note that the sales and marketing discipline in hospitality has evolved significantly over the years. Beyond traditional sales calls and networking, today’s DOSMs are deeply involved in digital marketing, strategic partnerships, destination branding, event management and customer experience strategies.

The strong representation of women in these senior commercial positions also reflects the broader transformation within the hospitality industry, where merit, leadership capability and adaptability increasingly define success regardless of gender.

Meanwhile, the hospitality industry here is also awaiting the official opening of a few more hotels, among them are the InterContinental Resort Penang, The Westin Penang, Hyatt Regency Penang, Marriott Penang Queens Waterfront, Hompton Bayan Lepas are notable.

As Penang continues to position itself as one of Malaysia’s leading tourism destinations, these hospitality professionals, both women and men, remain at the forefront of promoting the state to regional and international markets.

And with the pending opening of new hotels and resorts are we going to see more female DOSMs and Commercial Directors ? Let’s wait and see !
