Traditional welcome for VIP guests

Wonderful sounds and dance of traditional music by the Persatuan Kayan Sarawak (Cawangan Sg Asap) filled the air at the main entrance of the Straits Quay Retail Mall.

The 21-members troupe are on their roadshow to showcase the “Tarian dan Muzik Orang Ulu Sarawak also known as the Land of the Hornbills to entertain guests with their soothing music.

On hand to launch the event was State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy, Yb Yeoh Soon Hin along with Penang Director for the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) Jonathan Freddy Bagang, Tourism Malaysia Northern Region director Shahrul Aman, MAH Penang chairman Tony Goh , Persatuan Kayan Sarawak chairman Danny Bungan among others.

“This initiative to promote the culture and traditions from Sarawak to share and enjoy the diversity in the country.

“The culture and arts must be preserved for future generations to enjoy. My office welcomes more traditional and cultural shows not only locally but also internationally. These programmes are part of the Penang 2030 Vision,” said Yeoh.

Earlier, the VIP guests were given a traditional welcome with a drink of “Tapai”.

The show also attracted locals and expatriates to enjoy an evening of dance, music nd clad in traditional costumes.

Among the presentations was Tarian Datun Julud, Tarian Ngajat Lasan accompanied by the rendition of musical instruments like the Jatung Utand and Sapek.

The troupe had earlier performed at the Pavilion in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur from Aug 12 to 14 before coming to Penang.
