Shangri-La Rasa Sayang and Shangri-La Golden Sands, Penang hosted a Buka Puasa event for 60 boys and girls from the Islamic Orphanage Welfare Association of Penang.
The event was held on Nurul Al-Quran (March 18), a day that signifies the Light of the Quran during the holy month of Ramadan, adding a special occasion to the gathering.
Present to welcome them was Udo Wattich, the hotel manager and his team.
The atmosphere was filled with warmth and camaraderie as the children, along with their caregivers, gathered to join in the evening’s festivities.
Following the prayers, the children were treated to a sumptuous Selera Kampung buffet, featuring some of the finest Indonesian dishes. These culinary delights were specially curated by talented chefs from Shangri-La Jakarta, ensuring an authentic and delightful dining experience for all.

To make the night even more special, a twin boy from the orphanage was surprised with a birthday cake, a gesture that brought smiles and joy to everyone present. In addition to this heartwarming surprise, each child received duit raya, or festive money, along with homemade cookies, generously provided by the resorts.
The duit raya was personally handed over to the children by Udo adding a personal touch to the evening’s celebrations.
This meaningful event is part of Shangri-La’s ongoing commitment to giving back to the community and bringing joy to young hearts. The evening was a testament to the power of kindness and the importance of strengthening community bonds, especially during the sacred month of Ramadan.

“We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to host this event and to share in the joy and spirit of Ramadan with such amazing young individuals,” said Dato’ Suleiman Tunku Abdul Rahman, Director of Communications. “It’s a privilege to contribute to the happiness and well-being of these children and to celebrate the values of compassion and generosity.”
As the event concluded, the smiles on the children’s faces were a reminder of the impact that acts of kindness and community support can have. The Shangri-La looks forward to continuing its efforts to support and uplift the community, fostering a spirit of unity and care for those in need.
