The senior winemaker for the Saint Clair Family Estate from New Zealand, Kyle Thompson was in this part of the world to introduce some fine samples to a select group of guests at the E&O Hotel.

The New World wine pairing dinner showcased a range of white and red labels namely the New Zealand Saint Clair Marlborough Origin Sauvignon Blanc 2022, Saint Clair Wairau Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2021, Saint Clair Pioneer Block 5 Pinot Gris 2022, Saint Clair Pioneer Block 14 Pinot Noir 2021 and the Saint Clair Omaka Reserve Pinot Noir 2021.

The Saint Clair Family Estate is owned by Neal and Judy Ibbotson who have been viticulture pioneers in Marlborough since 1978. Their mission is to create world-class wines that exceed their customers’ every expectation.

Meanwhile, Thompson began his career working in England and later in France to fine tune his craft in wine making. Having worked in several renowned Marlborough wineries, his career at the Saint Clair began in 2006.

“Since joining Saint Clair, I have been able to further my international wine experience that has resulted in their team winning 300 trophies and 400 gold medals,” he said, adding that wine making is his “dream” job.

“I am able to combine my love for old-world wines and techniques with the freedom, innovation and cutting-edge technology that winemaking in New Zealand gives me,” shares Thompson.

The Marlborough district in New Zealand offers the unique mix of climate and soil resulting in a perfect wine range.

Guests were treated to some fine dishes put out by the E&O’s F&B team in the likes of the Green-Lipped Mussel Gratin, for starters, Crayfish Salad on Crispy Kumara, Braised Ostrich Filet and finally the main course, Herb crusted – Rack of Spring Lamb.

The evening was brought together by The Wine Shop which was represented by Michael Low, Northern Region Sales Manager and Sunny Teh, Director of Sales and Operations.

The Wine Shop currently has outlets in Pulau Tikus, Tanjung Bungah and Bayan Lepas.

As for Thompson, he is on his onward way to Singapore and Hong Kong on his wine adventures after his quick pit stop in Penang.

Kudos to the fine food and flawless service of the team led by their Food & Beverage Director Colin Wong.
