The Qingdao–Penang Tourism Industry Business Matching Session, held at the St Giles Wembley Hotel, drew a record turnout, signalling growing momentum in tourism collaboration between China and Malaysia.

The session brought together 30 tourism stakeholders from Qingdao and 150 participants from Penang’s tourism and hospitality sector, reflecting strong industry confidence in the newly launched Qingdao–Penang direct flight.

The opening ceremony was officiated by YB Wong Hon Wai, in the presence of Li Yuchuan  Director of Marketing Committee Qingdao Airlines and his delegation.

Also in attendance were Dato Tony Goh Penang MAH hairman and Ooi Chok Yan, CEO Penang Global Tourism among other key industry figures.

In his opening address, Wong welcomed delegates from Qingdao and local industry players, highlighting the strong support and shared commitment to strengthening bilateral tourism ties.

He noted that the impressive turnout reflects the deepening relationship and growing friendship between Penang and Qingdao, describing the session as a timely platform for industry players to capitalise on enhanced connectivity.

“With the launch of the Qingdao–Penang direct flight, we are entering a new phase of cooperation. This session is not just about networking, it is about transforming connectivity into meaningful partnerships and tangible tourism growth,” he said.

Wong described the new route as more than a transport link, positioning it as an “Air Silk Road” connecting Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia, with the potential to drive regional connectivity and multilateral collaboration.

Highlighting the complementary appeal of both destinations, he noted that Qingdao, famed for its coastal charm and German-influenced architecture, offers a stark yet attractive contrast to Penang’s tropical allure, creating strong potential for joint tourism offerings.

He also encouraged industry players to develop integrated travel experiences, including dual-city packages linking Penang and Kuala Lumpur, leveraging existing connectivity to enhance visitor experiences.

Meanwhile, Li expressed confidence in the new route’s potential, noting strong engagement from Penang stakeholders during the session. He added that Qingdao Airlines’ network connectivity to Japan and South Korea further enhances the route’s appeal, opening doors for multi-destination travel across the region.
