Press statement issued by Dato Yeoh Soon Hin – chairman Penang Port Commission
The Penang Port Commission (PPC) welcomes the proposal regarding the planning of a new ferry route from Aceh to Penang.
As the port authority and regulatory body of Penang Port, PPC views this proposal as a positive initiative in strengthening regional ties between Malaysia and Indonesia.
Penang Port, represented by Penang Port Sdn. Bhd. as the appointed port operator, has held discussions with the Aceh Government to obtain detailed information and exchange views on Penang Port’s level of readiness to receive ferry services from Aceh.
As a result of these discussions, both parties have reached a consensus that the initial operations will involve only passenger and cargo ferries. This is because foreign-registered vehicles require further approval from the relevant authorities. The proposed vessels for this operation are estimated to be 59 meters in length, with a capacity of 200 passengers for passenger ferries and 100 tons for cargo vessels.
For implementation purposes, Penang Port has identified suitable port facilities for the ferry route operations. Passenger ferries will dock at the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) to disembark passengers, while cargo vessels will carry out unloading and cargo transfer operations at the Butterworth Deep Water Wharves. .
However, several other aspects need to be thoroughly examined before this new ferry route can be realized. Key considerations include identifying a qualified ferry operator to carry out the operations, determining the starting route (whether from Aceh or Penang), and organizing a ferry service schedule that meets user demand.
SPPP welcomes this new ferry route initiative as it holds potential to strengthen port relations, boost trade, expand the tourism sector, and enhance the economic network between Penang and Aceh.
With full support and cooperation from Penang Port Sdn. Bhd. (PPSB) and other stakeholders, PPC is committed to ensuring the smooth implementation of this ferry route, in compliance with relevant legal regulations, and ultimately contributing to regional economic development.
