The Penang Hoteliers’ Association (PHA) celebrated its 68th anniversary in grand style at the St Giles Wembley Hotel, commemorating nearly seven decades of service to Penang’s hospitality and tourism industry.

Gracing the occasion as guest of honour was Penang Chief Minister YAB Chow Kon Yeow, accompanied by State Executive Councillor for Tourism and Creative Economy YB Wong Hon Wai.

They were warmly welcomed by PHA Chairman Foong Hon Beng, Executive Advisor Dato Lim Mee Lee, and committee members.

In his address, Chief Minister Chow congratulated the association on its milestone and acknowledged PHA’s longstanding contribution to Penang’s economy.

“For nearly seven decades, your association has played a pivotal role in shaping Penang’s hospitality landscape,” said Chow.

He also outlined the state’s tourism focus areas: enhancing direct air connectivity, hosting more international and regional events, ensuring top-tier safety and hygiene standards, strengthening digital infrastructure for tourists and digital nomads, and engaging with hoteliers to raise service excellence.

Chow emphasized the importance of evolving with changing traveller expectations.

“Tourists today are not just looking for rooms, F&B or location. They want to see sustainable practices — from energy use and waste management to community support.”

He assured that the state government remains committed to supporting tourism through improved infrastructure, connectivity, and policies.

YB Wong Hon Wai echoed the sentiment, highlighting the hotel industry as a cornerstone of Penang’s tourism ecosystem.

“From boutique hotels and heritage-themed stays in the UNESCO zone to budget-friendly lodgings and five-star luxury experiences, each plays a vital role in shaping Penang as a premier destination,” he said.

“Over 68 years, the association has grown into a formidable pillar not only for the hotel sector but for Penang’s wider tourism ecosystem.”

PHA Chairman Foong Hon Beng thanked the Chief Minister for his support and shared his vision for members moving forward.

“Our members should embody four key qualities:Professionalism – in service across all hospitality sectors, Cultural competence – to foster a globally welcoming environment, Digitalisation and innovation – to align with modern travel trends, and Safety and responsibility – which remain top priorities for travellers.”

Foong also welcomed the expansion of Penang International Airport and the upcoming LRT project as vital developments for the tourism industry.

Also in attendance were Madam Ding Xiao, Chinese Acting Consul General in Penang; Dato Tony Goh, Chairman of the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Penang Chapter; MAH National Vice President Dato Khoo Boo Lim; Ooi Chok Yan, CEO of Penang Global Tourism (PGT); Mary Ann Harris from PBA; and many other distinguished guests.
