Penang welcomed a remarkable 8,237,072 hotel guests throughout 2024, marking a 13.3% increase from the 7,272,526 guests recorded in 2023.

This impressive figure not only reflects a strong recovery but also surpasses pre-pandemic levels by a significant margin.

“Compared to 2017’s 6,381,751 hotel guests, Penang has achieved a remarkable 29% growth, underscoring the island’s renewed vitality and attractiveness as a premier travel destination.

“This surge in visitor numbers highlights the robust revival of Penang’s tourism industry, fueled by diverse attractions including its UNESCO World Heritage sites, rich cultural tapestry, culinary delights and vibrant festivals,” said YB Wong Hon Wai State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy speaking on the sidelines of the 13th Malaysia International Conference on Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (MICOLLAC 2025) at the St. Giles Wembley Hotel yesterday.

Among the contributing factors are the enhanced Air Connectivity Fuels Tourism Growth –
A key driver behind this tourism boom is the improved air connectivity provided by Penang International Airport (PIA), which serves as the primary gateway to the island. Over recent years, PIA has expanded its flight network with several new routes and increased frequencies, making Penang more accessible to international travellers.

The notable developments – Sichuan Airlines operates five weekly flights between Chengdu Tianfu International Airport and Penang, facilitating easier access for Chinese tourists, especially from western China. Other Chinese airlines flying to PIA are China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, Juneyao Airlines and Xiamen Air. Additional direct flights from other major Chinese cities are scheduled to launch during peak travel periods like the May Day Golden Week, enhancing Penang’s appeal to one of the largest outbound tourism markets globally.

PIA’s weekly flight operations increased from 523 in 2023 to 565 in 2024, with international flights rising from 259 to 304 weekly services. The airport currently connects Penang directly to 20 global cities, including Dubai, Doha, multiple Chinese hubs, and key Southeast Asian destinations. Looking Ahead -This expansion in flight connectivity not only facilitates easier travel but also complements Penang’s growing reputation as a cultural and tourism hotspot. It enables more international visitors to experience the island’s unique blend of heritage, natural beauty, and modern amenities.

With tourism numbers soaring and flight access improving, Penang is well-positioned to sustain its momentum, welcoming even more visitors in the coming years.
