To ensure the cleanliness of Georgetown, its surrounding areas and the state overall, the Penang State Government has rolled out the “Leave No Trace” campaign.
The timely reminder comes from the office of the Tourism and Creative Economy in anticipation of the sharp spike in visitors for the incoming June school holiday season.
Penang State Exco YB Yeoh Soon Hin said that ever since the reopening of borders and the transition into an endemic, his “Responsible Tourism” campaign has pivoted to emphasize on environmental cleanliness.
“Tourism is Penang’s asset and we must ensure that our cleanliness and hygiene are not compromised in the face of tourism activities,” he said in a press statement.
He added that the state has earlier seen a surge in garbage volume over the long Labour Day weekend, especially with food packaging and other materials.
“Responsible Tourism is the latest form of tourism promoted in other countries in view of the new normal. Amongst the most prevailing aspects is public hygiene,”
“Improper disposal of garbage will be a threat to Penang’s environment and public hygiene,” he reiterated.
On another note, Yeoh also reminded tourism industry players to learn from previous experiences and enhance internal coordination work to better accommodate the tourist volume in June, which he anticipates to spike too.
“The shortage of labour in the tourism industry remains a big challenge with even hotel general managers being mobilised for housekeeping duties during peak season. I believe that if we make our plans ahead as tourists, we can help to ease their burdens and lift the weight off their shoulders,” he said.
