Penang Chief Minister YAB Chow Kon Yeow took time to attend the Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MICCI) Northern Chapter’s luncheon at the Olive Tree Hotel yesterday.
The annual gathering brings together various captains of the industry in the Penang and neighbouring states.
He was welcomed by Dato’ Brian Tan Guan Hooi, Branch Chairman of Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI) Northern and his committee.
Being established in 1837, this year’s event holds special significance as MICCI celebrates its 188th anniversary and is the oldest chamber of commerce in Malaysia.
Held with the theme “Penang On The Rise – Focusing on Infrastructure, Sustainability, and Innovation,” the 2025 dialogue brought together a distinguished gathering of business leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders from across the state.
It served as a dynamic platform to exchange insights on the region’s geopolitical landscape, upcoming infrastructure developments and sustainable economic strategies.

MICCI was deeply honoured with the presence of YAB Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang, who shared his perspectives on the state’s current geopolitical and economic outlook. His keynote address underscored Penang’s vision for inclusive growth and innovation-led development, reaffirming the state’s commitment to being a forward-looking hub for investment and talent.
“It is always great to be here — especially with familiar faces, good company, and even better food. And while we’re technically here to talk business, I think we all know these lunches are also about sharing thoughts, making connections, and getting real about the things that matter — to Penang and to Malaysia as a whole,” said Chow.
He also emphasized that Penang must not only respond to global uncertainties but lead through them. He highlighted the state’s
critical role in global supply chains, particularly in sectors such as semiconductors, precision tools, and medical devices. He noted that while recent international trade tensions pose challenges, they also presented opportunities for Penang to assert its leadership through resilience and innovation.
He commended the Federal Government’s proactive diplomatic efforts in mitigating potential trade impacts and stressed the importance of agility and competitiveness among local businesses.
The luncheon also featured engaging discussions between the attendees and Chow, offering a valuable opportunity for direct engagement on key issues affecting the business community. The discussion covered a range of important topics including infrastructure development, intellectual property protection, and tourism growth.

Chow was notably candid throughout the session, addressing each question with clarity and confidence, demonstrating that he had the facts and insights at his fingertips. MICCI members were able to share their insights, raise concerns, and explore collaborative pathways toward strengthening Penang’s position as a hub for sustainable and innovative progress.
Also present was Dato’ Seri Nazir Ariff, Executive Deputy Chairman of Aspen Vision Development Sdn Bhd cum Past Branch Chairman of MICCI Northern, Dato’ Loo Lee Lian, Chief Executive Officer of Invest Penang, Dato’ Dr. Ooi Kee Beng, Executive Director of Penang Institute, Dr Hari Narayanan Chief Executive Officer of Penang Skills Development Centre (PSDC) among others.
