Penang’s rising piano virtuoso Vincent Ong has made the state proud by clinching 5th Prize (ex-aequo) at the prestigious 19th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Poland — one of the world’s most respected platforms for classical musicians.
Ong, 24, stood out among nearly 700 pianists from 54 countries, earning international recognition for his artistry, discipline, and musical maturity.
In a statement today, YB Wong Hon Wai, Penang State Executive Councillor for Tourism and Creative Economy, congratulated Ong for his remarkable achievement and commended his dedication to his craft.
“I want to congratulate Vincent Ong, who has made Penang proud on the world stage,” said Wong. “At the 19th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Poland, he emerged among the top performers, securing 5th Prize in a field of nearly 700 pianists from 54 countries. This is an extraordinary achievement for a 24-year-old Penangite.”
Wong praised Ong’s perseverance and discipline, describing his success as an inspiration to young Malaysians.
“It takes years of quiet discipline, lonely practice, and deep self-belief to reach this level. Vincent’s success is not just a personal victory — it is a reminder of what Penangites can achieve when they persevere and believe in themselves. He has shown that with discipline and passion, Penang talents can shine on the international stage.”

He also revealed that he has personally written to congratulate Ong and extended an invitation for him to perform a homecoming solo recital in Penang.
“I hope the people of Penang will have the opportunity to witness his journey and experience that proud moment when one of our own stands on stage to show the world what Penang talent looks like,” Wong added.
Wong concluded by emphasizing the broader impact of Ong’s success: “His achievement is more than an award — it will light a spark in the next generation. Bravo, Vincent Ong. Penang awaits your return.”
