Penang Island City Council Mayor Dato A Rajendran “turun padang” to inspect the repair works on a leaking sewer pipe owned by Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) at Jalan Burma along Burma Road here yesterday morning.

He was accompanied by Oung Chee Kuan, Chief Operating Officer of Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) Penang, Ir. Cheah Chin Kooi, Director of Engineering at MBPP, and Mohd Nasrul Nizam Nasri, Senior Engineer at MBPP.

During the site visit, the Mayor updated that the Penang City Council (MBPP) has decided to allow IWK to carry out the repair works at night.

This decision to schedule night work instead of daytime work was made due to the lower traffic volume on Jalan Penang (both directions) heading towards Jalan Burma during night hours compared to the day.

It also takes into account the need to keep two lanes of the main road open during the day and one (1) lane at night along Jalan Burma, as a measure to ease traffic congestion.

The sewer pipe leak issue was detected on Saturday, and the MBPP Engineering Department promptly informed IWK for immediate action.

IWK has set a target of five (5) days to complete all repair works. These works include replacing a 21-inch diameter pipe that is 13 meters in length.

All road users are advised to slow down and comply with traffic signage while the repair works are being carried out.
