The Penang International Airport (PIA) will add yet another direct flight when Batik Air starts its from Penang to Singapore come this December.
In a press statement, State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy, YB Wong Hon Wai welcomed this move as it will add to the vibrant tourism industry here.
“Singapore has long been one of Penang’s top three source countries for tourist arrivals. Additionally, due to the strength of the Singapore dollar, Singaporean tourists have relatively strong spending power.”
“In light of this, Singaporean visitors play an important role both in terms of visitor numbers and spending capacity. Therefore, the launch of this direct Singapore–Penang flight by Batik Air will offer Singaporean travelers an additional convenient option to fly directly to Penang. This will significantly facilitate tourism, investment, and leisure travel from Singapore to Penang, further driving the growth of Penang’s tourism economy.” said Wong.
In a related development, he also added that HK Express had earlier announced that starting from October 26, 2025, its Hong Kong–Penang route will increase from one flight daily to two flights daily. This decision likewise brings new opportunities to Penang’s tourism sector.

“According to 2024 data from Airports Council International (ACI), Hong Kong International Airport ranks 9th globally in total passenger traffic, while Singapore Changi Airport ranks 15th in international passenger traffic. It is clear that both Changi and Hong Kong airports are highly influential global aviation hubs. With the added connectivity provided by Batik Air and HK Express, Penang’s position in the international flight network is further elevated. More frequent flights not only make it easier for tourists from Hong Kong and Singapore to visit Penang, but also provide more convenient options for travelers from around the world to connect to Penang via these two hubs.”
“The launch and increase of flights from these international aviation hubs not only symbolize closer ties between Penang and the key hubs of Hong Kong and Singapore, but also bring more business opportunities for Penang’s tourism players and SMEs. As the direct flight network continues to expand, Penang’s competitiveness and attractiveness as an international tourist destination will continue to rise.” added Wong.
Meanwhile, also on December 1, Batik Air will also commence its direct flights from Changi Airport to Ipoh and Subang too.
While the Penang and Ipoh flights will be operated on the Boeing 737 MAX, the Subang flights will be served on the Boeing 737-800.
