The newly installed autogate system at the Penang International Airport has benefited more than 720K travellers.
According to Penang State Executive Councillor for Tourism and Creative Economy, Wong Hon Wai, he met with the commander of the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS), Zuhair bin Jamaludin and his delegation, at KOMTAR during the sitting of the Penang State Legislative Assembly recently.
Both parties held discussions on the enhancement of immigration clearance systems at Penang International Airport.
“Zuhair briefed me on the latest developments and implementation progress of the Airport Autogate System and the National Integrated Immigration System (MyNIISe). Based on the information, he also provided answers and clarifications during the State Legislative Assembly sitting, in order to ensure that relevant updates are effectively communicated to State Assembly members and the public.
“According to data provided by the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS), a total of 722,151 passenger movements were recorded using the new Autogate system at Penang International Airport between 31 December 2025 and 26 April 2026. This reflects the effectiveness of the system since its implementation and its strong acceptance among travellers,” shared Wong.
He also added that the Autogate system currently allows travellers from 73 countries to use automated departure clearance, while also permitting travellers from 65 countries to use automated entry clearance into Malaysia. In response to the growing volume of international passengers, the number of Autogate facilities is also planned to be increased this year to 12 lanes for arrivals and 12 lanes for departures, further improving clearance efficiency.
“In addition, through the MyNIISe application and the upgraded Autogate system, travellers are now able to complete immigration clearance using QR codes, eliminating the need for long queues at conventional counters. The system is also expected to be progressively integrated with and eventually replace the existing MyBorderPass system. Beyond streamlining immigration procedures, the MyNIISe application also allows users to conveniently and efficiently access their personal travel movement records digitally.
“Currently, passengers at Penang International Airport have three main options for immigration clearance: using a passport at the Autogate system, using a QR code via the MyNIISe application at the Autogate system, or proceeding through manual clearance at immigration counters. With these technological advancements in place, travel clearance has become significantly more efficient. Some international visitors have even described the overall experience as “as smooth as silk”, offering a more comfortable and enhanced arrival and departure experience,” said Wpng in a press statement.
