In a boost for tourism, Seberang Perai welcomes its first Marriott brand entry following the signing a MOU signing between Bertam Resort Penang and Marriott International earlier today.
On hand to witness the ceremony was State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy YB Wong Hon Wai.
Also present was YB Dato Seri Reezal Merican, Assemblyman of Bertam, Dato Baderul Amin, Mayor of Seberang Perai City Council Dato’ Mohamad Iqbal, Managing Director of Bertam Resort & Water Park Penang, Andree Susilo of Marriott International among others.
In congratulating both parties for forging the MOU, Wong also highlighted that the ceremony is a milestone moment for Bertam and for Penang’s mainland tourism development.
“This collaboration is not merely a business arrangement — it reflects strong confidence in Penang’s evolving tourism landscape and its long-term potential.
“This initiative also aligns closely with the Penang State Government’s vision to strengthen tourism infrastructure across both the island and the mainland, in line with our broader tourism master plan and economic growth agenda.

“The introduction of Marriott International’s Tribute Portfolio brand is particularly meaningful. It brings with it a distinct identity — one that celebrates character, storytelling, and unique guest experiences. It is particularly worth noting that this also marks the first-ever entry of the Marriott International brand into Seberang Perai, a milestone of historic significance that opens a new chapter in the development of the hospitality and tourism industry in the mainland region.
“From a broader perspective, Penang Island and Seberang Perai together delineate the two key geographical pillars of Penang’s development. The manufacturing and services sectors, in turn, serve as the dual-core engines driving the state’s economic growth. Within the development landscape of North Seberang Perai, the technology and tourism industries are gradually evolving into a synergistic “dual-wing” structure, mutually reinforcing each other and advancing in tandem, steering the region towards a more diversified, balanced, and high-quality stage of development.
“From a tourism and cultural perspective, the Penang State Government continues to advance a diversified tourism development agenda in North Seberang Perai. A case in point is the completion of the Guar Kepah Archaeological Gallery, which introduces a tourism attraction that combines historical and cultural depth with educational value to the region. This further enriches the cultural tourism landscape of North Seberang Perai, thereby creating a more compelling and multi-layered destination experience,” said Wong.
He also added that this project is expected to generate meaningful economic impact — from the creation of jobs across various skill levels, to expanded opportunities for local businesses, SMEs, and service providers. I look forward to the day we return, not just to celebrate a signing — but to witness a thriving destination that stands as a testament to vision, commitment, and successful collaboration.
Also present was Dato Khoo Boo Lim, MAH Vice president and Ooi Chok Yan, PGT CEO.
