Global mobility platform inDrive is strengthening its presence in Penang, reaffirming its commitment to providing safe, affordable, and community-driven mobility solutions for both residents and visitors as demand for ride-hailing continues to grow across the state.
As one of Malaysia’s most dynamic economic and tourism destinations, Penang faces increasing mobility challenges. With its growing population, vibrant tourism scene, and ongoing improvements to public transport, the need for complementary and reliable mobility options remains key to ensuring smooth connectivity for all. Congestion in popular areas such as George Town and Bayan Lepas, along with rising living costs, continues to affect both residents’ daily commutes and tourists’ travel experiences.
inDrive operates on a unique peer-to-peer pricing model, which allows passengers and drivers to negotiate and agree on a fair fare. This approach has been at the heart of inDrive’s operations since it entered the Malaysian market, promoting fairness, transparency, and flexibility. It helps keep rides affordable during high-demand periods while ensuring drivers earn income that truly reflects their time and effort.
“Penang holds a special place in our expansion strategy. As the city continues to grow, we see an opportunity to make mobility more accessible and inclusive — for everyday commuters and visitors alike. Our focus is to empower drivers with fair earning opportunities while helping passengers manage their transport costs, especially in today’s challenging economic environment,” said Azlan Anwar, Driver Operations Manager at inDrive Malaysia.
As part of its 2025–2026 roadmap, inDrive is rolling out enhanced safety and technology features to improve user confidence and experience. These include upgraded driver verification processes for better accountability, real-time trip monitoring to improve passenger safety, and enhanced in-app support for faster issue resolution and smoother ride matching. In line with inDrive’s expansion goals, the platform aims to achieve a 30% year-on-year increase in active drivers in Penang for 2025–2026. To date, the inDrive app has recorded over 2.5 million downloads across Malaysia since 2022, reflecting the growing trust and adoption of its platform nationwide.
inDrive remains an active contributor to Malaysia’s growing gig economy, providing flexible income opportunities for thousands of drivers nationwide. The platform fully supports the new Gig Workers Bill, which aims to enhance welfare protection and ensure long-term sustainability for gig workers. In Penang, inDrive is strengthening driver recruitment and engagement initiatives focusing on welfare support, recognition programmes, and skills development to help drivers build financial resilience and career stability. Looking ahead, inDrive will soon launch a new initiative to enhance mobility access for persons with disabilities (OKU), reinforcing its dedication to inclusive and equitable mobility for all.
As Penang continues to evolve, improving access to safe, affordable, and reliable transport remains essential for both residents and visitors. Through its community-focused approach, inDrive aims to play a constructive role in supporting the state’s broader mobility and socio economic goals.
