A thunderous roar of traditional drums set the tone as Gurney Plaza Penang ushered in its Chinese New Year celebrations in spectacular fashion yesterday evening.
Welcoming the Year of the Horse, the mall’s Main Atrium has been transformed into a radiant festive showcase, featuring colourful LED fish lanterns and a majestic 35-foot pagoda standing proudly at the pavilion. Symbolising success, perseverance and rising fortune, brilliantly lit golden fish lanterns appear to swim gracefully from the base of the pagoda to its peak, creating a striking visual centrepiece.
Adding to the cultural richness, the atrium is illuminated with lanterns adorned with traditional Chinese calligraphy and artwork by Yeow Chye Art Studio and calligraphy artist Mumu, blending timeless artistry with modern flair.

The festive cheer continues throughout the season with an exciting line-up of performances and activities, including High-Pole Lion Dance, dazzling LED Lion Dance and Fortune Dragon showcases, God of Prosperity blessings, traditional Chinese orchestra performances, and a delightful Tanghulu pop-up, promising an immersive celebration for shoppers of all ages.
The vibrant launch ceremony was led by Ms Selina Ng, Managing Director, Retail, CapitaLand Investment (Malaysia), alongside Peter Chan, General Manager of Gurney Plaza, Queensbay Mall and East Coast Mall, Centre Manager of Queensbay Mall, Silvester Soh, and their respective teams. Lending support was Penang Global Tourism Chief Executive Officer, Ooi Chok Yan and Ms Pauline Yoon.

The evening was well attended by media representatives and shoppers, all soaking in the jubilant atmosphere. Following the drum performance, lion dance troupes and a 12-member God of Prosperity team made their rounds, spreading good luck and festive blessings to guests.
