As the year draws to a close and the season of goodwill approaches, Arati Vilas, a well-loved eatery in Tanjong Tokong, spreads festive cheer by hosting a special Christmas lunch for 50 children from needy homes, reaffirming its long-standing commitment to community care and compassion.
Established more than three decades ago, Arati Vilas has earned its reputation as one of Penang’s most cherished South Indian restaurants. Known for its authentic banana leaf rice, homely flavours and warm hospitality, the restaurant has long been a gathering place for families, friends and loyal patrons from all walks of life.
Founded as a modest family-run business, Arati Vilas has grown steadily over the years while remaining true to its roots. Its dedication to preserving traditional recipes and serving honest, wholesome food has made it a household name among locals, visitors and tourists alike.

Beyond its culinary appeal, Arati Vilas is widely recognised for its generosity and strong community spirit. Over the years, the restaurant has consistently stepped forward to help those in need, including food distribution initiatives during challenging times and Covid-19 lockdown, reflecting a philosophy that giving back is just as important as serving good food.
In conjunction with the upcoming Christmas celebrations, the restaurant transformed its space into one filled with joy, laughter and festive warmth as it welcomed children from underprivileged homes for a memorable afternoon. The initiative aimed to give the children not just a hearty meal, but also a meaningful festive experience.
The young guests were treated to a sumptuous lunch spread, with highlights including flavourful Chicken Biryani, aromatic Mutton Biryani, and a variety of other delicious dishes lovingly prepared by the Arati Vilas kitchen team. Each child also received festive goody bags, adding to the excitement and holiday cheer.

The event captured the true spirit of Christmas — sharing, kindness and togetherness — as staff and volunteers came together to ensure the children felt welcomed, valued and celebrated during this special time of year.
For Arati Vilas, the initiative was a reflection of its core values. “Food has always been our way of bringing people together,” said R. Vengdesparan, the owner of the popular restaurant, noting that moments like these reinforce the importance of compassion and unity, especially during the festive season.
Supporting him in the kitchen is his wife, Mdm J. Philomena and her kitchen crew members.

With the lights of Christmas shining bright and a new year on the horizon, Arati Villas looks forward to continuing its journey of serving great food, creating meaningful connections, and making a positive difference — one meal at a time.
The joyful afternoon was filled with laughter, togetherness and the comforting aroma of a sumptuous spread.
Lending support to the corporate social responsibility event was lawyer Shankaran and wife, lawyer Ronald Menon and wife, well-wishers, volunteers and supporters.
