Penang Port Commission (PPC) chairman Datuk Tan Teik Cheng took media members on a walkabout on both sides of the ferry terminals here to check on the progress of refurbishment work being carried out.
Once completed by August this year, both terminals, Raja Tun Uda Ferry Terminal and the Sultan Abdul Halum Ferry Terminal will offer airport standard facilities for members of the public.
“Among the facilities are carpet flooring, air-conditioned waiting areas, wifi facilities, phone charging docks, cafes and more.
“The move will greatly help the service for the general public on both sides of the terminals, on the island and Butterworth.
“Presently, work is flowing smoothly and is 60 % complete and everything is on schedule as planned,” said Tan who was accompanied by the head project & facilities Penang Port, Mior Saifulnizam Mior Jamal.
There will be a capacity of 300 passengers people at any one time at the new ferry terminals.
“We will also ensure proper facilities for the disabled so that they can move around freely,” said Tan adding that the federal government had contributed RM30 million for the purchase of the new ferries whereas the other costs involved will be borne by Penang Port Sdn Bhd.
Tan also added that they will buy five new ferries which will come into service by next year.
