Come December 2026, two more hotels will join Penang’s hospitality industry.
They are the InterContinental Penang Resort in Teluk Bahang and a Hyatt branded hotel at the LIGHT Waterfront Penang thus adding to Penang’s vibrant tourism and hospitality industry.
The opening is particularly significant as Penang continues to broaden its appeal beyond its established strengths in heritage, food and culture with increasing opportunities to attract higher-yield leisure travellers, families, wellness tourists, destination weddings and the meetings and incentives market.
The InterContinental Penang Resort located at Teluk Bahang occupies the former Mutiara Beach Resort is operated by the Tradewinds Group. Its transformation into an InterContinental property represents a new chapter for the beachfront site and adds another high-end accommodation option to Penang’s tourism inventory.
The resort will be led by experienced American General Manager Jeffrey Seward, who brings extensive international hospitality experience to the opening. His team will be tasked with establishing the property as a new luxury gateway to the island’s natural, cultural and culinary experiences.
With 348 rooms and suites, the resort is expected to strengthen Penang’s ability to accommodate travellers seeking a full-service resort experience, while complementing the island’s existing urban hotels and heritage properties.
The property’s facilities have also been designed to broaden its market reach. These include Club InterContinental, providing an elevated guest experience with dedicated lounge facilities; Gemala Spa & Wellness Village, focused on wellness and relaxation; and dedicated recreational facilities including a swimming pool, fitness centre and beachfront activities.
For the MICE and events sector, the property will offer a Grand Ballroom, meeting rooms, a boardroom and outdoor event spaces, creating additional capacity for corporate meetings, incentives, weddings and social events. This could further enhance Penang’s ability to package leisure and business travel, particularly for international groups looking to combine meetings with pre- and post-event experiences.
Food and beverage will form another important part of the proposition, with four dining concepts planned across the resort. These include Sulam, centred on Peranakan flavours; Paradiso, an Italian restaurant; Shinka, offering a Nikkei concept; and Coastal, an oceanfront dining venue.
Meanwhile the Hyatt branded hotel will be located at the LIGHT Waterfront Penang. They will offer 459 contemporary guest rooms, further strengthening Penang’s premium hospitality offering.
The hotel is designed to cater to both business and leisure travellers, providing seamless access to key commercial districts, the Penang Waterfront Convention Centre (PWCC) and the island’s major attractions. More importantly, they will also be connected to the Penang LRT Mutiara Line.
The location of both properties, one in the far North of the island the the other on a more central location on the island, could prove valuable as Penang seeks to encourage visitors to explore beyond George Town and distribute tourism activity more widely across the island.
The opening therefore represents more than the addition of another hotel to Penang’s accommodation supply.
It signals the continued evolution of the island’s tourism product towards a more diversified offering, where heritage and gastronomy are complemented by luxury resort experiences, wellness, nature and high-value events.
The industry will be watching closely to see how the new properties contribute to Penang’s ambitions to attract higher-spending visitors, encourage longer stays and strengthen the island’s position within the competitive Southeast Asian tourism market.
