A child can influence a family, a family can influence a community and a community can influence society.
That was the inspiring message shared by Puan Tan Kean Kee, wife of the Chief Minister of Penang, during the launch of the “No Plastic: Own Container” project at SMK Tunku Puan Habsah earlier today.
The initiative was jointly organised by Pertubuhan Wanita Mutiara and the Lions Club of George Town to encourage the use of reusable food containers and reduce reliance on single-use plastics.
Puan Tan, who is also President of Pertubuhan Wanita Mutiara, was welcomed on arrival by headmistress Ruzana Zakaria, Lions Club of George Town President Kenji Tan, Project Director Lion Peter Chung, and other club members. Also present was District Governor David Seow.
Speaking at the event, Puan Tan said the project aligns with the Penang State Government’s sustainability agenda as the state moves to strengthen measures to reduce the use of single-use plastics from Sept 1, 2026.
“Initiatives such as this demonstrate how schools, communities and civil society organisations can play a vital role in supporting environmental stewardship and sustainable development. They complement the Penang State Government’s commitment to building a more sustainable future,” she said.
She added that while a tiffin carrier may appear to be a simple item, it carries a powerful message.
“By encouraging students and teachers to use reusable containers, we are taking practical steps towards reducing single-use plastics, minimising waste and cultivating responsible environmental habits from a young age,” she said.
A total of 300 tiffin carriers were sponsored by Dato’ Jimmy Ong, Director of YBS Corporation, in support of the programme.
