The Sunway Carnival Mall has emerged as Penang’s busiest shopping destination, overtaking some of the state’s long-established retail icons, according to Penang State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy YB Wong Hon Wai.

Speaking at the launch of the Association of Tourism Attractions Penang (ATAP) Visit Penang Carnival 2026, Wong said the mall in Seberang Jaya has become the preferred meeting point for shoppers and visitors from across the Northern Corridor.

“It is no longer the more established malls in Gurney Drive and Bayan Lepas as the crowd from the Northern Region from states like Perak, Kedah and Perlis now converge at Sunway Carnival Mall,” he said.

Wong added that the mall’s growing popularity was one of the key reasons why ATAP selected it as the venue for its Visit Penang Carnival 2026, expecting it to attract strong visitor turnout from both Penang and neighbouring states.

Industry observers have noted that Sunway Carnival Mall’s strategic location on mainland Penang, just minutes from the North-South Expressway, the Butterworth-Kulim Expressway and the Penang Bridge, has made it an increasingly convenient destination for interstate visitors who no longer need to drive onto Penang Island to enjoy a comprehensive shopping and lifestyle experience.

Since its major expansion, Sunway Carnival Mall has grown into one of northern Malaysia’s largest retail and lifestyle destinations, boasting about one million square feet of net lettable space, approximately 350 retail outlets and over 3,200 parking bays. The mall is home to a wide mix of international, regional and local brands, complemented by an extensive selection of restaurants, cafés and family-friendly attractions.

Among its key facilities are Penang mainland’s largest cineplex, a fitness centre, family entertainment and amusement outlets, children’s play areas, spacious event spaces, concierge services, luggage and helmet lockers, free Wi-Fi, and anchor tenants including Parkson and SAM’s Groceria. Regular promotional campaigns, exhibitions and seasonal events have also helped strengthen its appeal as a lifestyle and community hub.

According to Sunway REIT, the mall now welcomes approximately 14 million visitors annually, reflecting its growing status as the premier retail destination on mainland Penang.

The Visit Penang Carnival 2026, organised by ATAP, is expected to leverage the mall’s high footfall to showcase Penang’s diverse tourism attractions, family entertainment offerings and travel experiences, while supporting the state’s efforts to draw more domestic and international visitors in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
