For the very first time, the Japan Cultural Festival 2026 makes its debut in Seberang Perai.

Present o launch the ceremony was Penang State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy, YB Wong Hon Wai.

Also present at the colourful ceremony was YB  Goh Choon Aik, State Exco for Trade, Entrepreneurial Development and Rural Development, Mr Machida Shinya, Consul-General of Japan in Penang, Liew Tian Xiong, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of EcoWorld, and Dato Chan Soo How, Chief Development Officer Eco North.

“This Japan Cultural Festival, which makes its debut in Seberang Perai, also marks the beginning of a series of upcoming Japanese cultural events in Penang. Penang Island will then take over with two major Japanese cultural celebrations — the Penang Yosakoi Festival 2026 on 27–28 June 2026 and the Penang Bon Odori Festival 2026 on 18 July 2026, both to be held at the Esplanade.”

“In recent years, Batu Kawan has been steadily emerging as an important cultural and sports hub in Penang. Since I relocated the Penang Bridge International Marathon to Batu Kawan in 2024, the area has increasingly demonstrated its potential to host large-scale cultural events and international sporting competitions, adding a new dimension to Penang’s development landscape.”

“The Japan Cultural Festival 2026 celebrates not only the richness of Japanese culture, but also the enduring and ever-strengthening friendship between Malaysia and Japan. This relationship is built upon mutual respect, trust, cooperation, and strong people-to-people connections, and it has continued to flourish over the decades.” he said.

Wong also added that Penang and Japan have long shared a unique and profound relationship. While Japan is undoubtedly one of Penang’s most important economic partners, the connection between Penang and Japan extends far beyond trade and investment. It is deeply rooted in community engagement, educational exchanges, cultural activities, and the genuine friendships forged between generations of people from both sides.

“Today, Penang is home to one of the most active and sizeable Japanese communities in Malaysia. Over the years, many Japanese expatriates and their families have chosen to live and work in Penang, regarding it as their second home. Many of them have also contributed significantly to the economy, industry, and local communities through multinational corporations and Japanese companies operating in Penang.”

“In many ways, Penang’s journey toward becoming a global manufacturing and innovation hub has been closely linked to the participation and partnership of Japanese companies. Japanese investments have played a pivotal role in shaping Penang’s industrial landscape, particularly in the electrical and electronics sector. These investments have created high-value jobs while facilitating technology transfer, knowledge sharing, and talent development, laying the foundation for Penang’s reputation as the ‘Silicon Valley of the East.’”

“Penang hosts a series of well-loved Japanese cultural celebrations that have gradually become part of the state’s identity and cultural landscape. This year alone, there have been at least six Japan-related events held in Penang, including the Japan Cultural Festival, Yosakoi Festival, Bon Odori Festival, Hinamatsuri, Autumn Festival, and the upcoming Japan Education Fair organized by the Japanese Graduates’ Association of Malaysia (JAGAM), which will be held on Saturday, 23 August 2025, at Gurney Bay Hotel.” added Wong.

He added that the Penang State Government looks forward to further strengthening cooperation between Penang and Japan in areas such as tourism, culture, education, investment, and people-to-people exchanges in the years ahead, bringing bilateral relations to even greater heights and ensuring their continued growth and success.
