Starting May 26, 2026, Canada is lifting the visa requirement for eligible citizens.
Malaysian citizens who have held a Canadian temporary resident visa (TRV) in the last 10 years or who currently hold a valid U.S. non-immigrant visa may be eligible to apply for an electronic travel authorization (eTA) instead of a visa when travelling to or transiting through Canada by air.
Travellers can visit the official website to learn who is eligible for an eTA and how to apply online: www.canada.ca/eta
This change reflects the strengthening ties between Canada and Malaysia and will help to expand partnerships and people-to-people connections.
Quick facts –
• The electronic travel authorization (eTA) application is used by Canadian officials to conduct light-touch, pre-travel screening of air travellers. It costs CAN $7 to apply, and most applications are automatically approved within minutes.
• Malaysian citizens are eligible to apply for an eTA if they meet all three requirements:
– have held a Canadian temporary resident visa (TRV) in the past 10 years or hold a valid United States non-immigrant visa at the time of application.
– are coming to Canada for a temporary stay (normally for up to six months)
– are flying to or transiting through a Canadian airport using a valid passport from Malaysia.
• An eTA is valid for up to five years, or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.
• People who already have a valid TRV can continue to use it to travel to Canada.
• Eligibility requirements for the eTA, the online application, and questions and answers are all found on the official Government of Canada web site: www.canada.ca/eta
