The Uganda High Commission in Kuala Lumpur brought its tourism delegation to Penang, marking a strategic effort to strengthen travel ties and showcase the best of both destinations.
The roadshow was led by H.E. Dr. Betty Bigombe, High Commissioner of Uganda to Malaysia, alongside key industry figures including Penang Global Tourism (PGT) CEO, Ooi Chok Yan representing State Tourism Exco YB Wong Hon Wai, Samuel Lee, Abdul Hadi Che Man of Tourism Malaysia, Dato’ Tony Goh, Dato’ Gulab Mahatam Rai, Ms. Carolyn Leong, Chairman of MATTA Penang among others.
The showcase was held at the St Giles Wembley Hotel here.
In her address, Dr. Betty highlighted that this was Uganda’s first-ever tourism roadshow in Penang, an initiative close to her heart, as she expressed her personal fondness for the island. She emphasized Uganda’s rich appeal as a destination for adventure seekers and nature lovers, offering extraordinary wildlife experiences.
“Visitors can look forward to encountering the renowned Big Five, lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros, set against the country’s breathtaking landscapes.
“This roadshow is part of our broader strategy to expand into new regions, build meaningful partnerships, and engage key tourism stakeholders,” she said, inviting Malaysians to discover Uganda as the “Pearl of Africa.” .
Meanwhile, Ooi expressed appreciation to the Uganda High Commission for selecting Penang as a platform for this collaboration. He noted that initiatives like this align with the momentum of Visit Malaysia Year, helping to boost international arrivals and create mutual opportunities.
“Today marks a special moment where the Pearl of the Orient meets the Pearl of Africa,” Ooi said. “We look forward to strengthening global partnerships and creating greater synergy in promoting tourism between our destinations.” he added.
