Penang’s skyline has long been defined by its rich heritage, shophouses, colonial landmarks and coastal charm, but for decades, one experience stands quite literally above the rest.

The iconic City Bayview Revolving Restaurant (Three Sixty Revolving Restaurant), perched atop Bayview Hotel Georgetown, has been a beloved dining destination and a symbol of the island’s evolving tourism story.

Opened in 1986, Bayview Hotel Georgetown was among the pioneering high-rise hotels that marked Penang’s transition into a modern urban destination while complementing its historic core.

At the time, the hotel introduced a range of contemporary facilities that elevated the city’s hospitality scene, including a rooftop swimming pool with panoramic sea views, elegant banquet halls for social and corporate events, and stylish dining venues that attracted both international visitors and locals alike.

Its crown jewel, however, was the revolving restaurant,an engineering and culinary novelty that offered guests a slow, 360-degree view of Georgetown’s skyline, from the Straits of Malacca to the island’s lush hills.

In its heyday, the restaurant was more than just a place to dine, it was an experience. It became “the place” for special occasions: romantic dinners set against sunset backdrops, lively birthday celebrations, anniversary milestones and prestigious corporate gatherings. For many, it was their first encounter with fine dining paired with breathtaking, ever-changing views of Penang.

Today, as Georgetown continues to evolve as a UNESCO-listed cultural destination, the City Bayview Revolving Restaurant prepares to close its doors, making way for a new chapter.

The hotel will undergo a major transformation and re-emerge as Oakwood Georgetown Penang, ushering in a refreshed hospitality experience for a new generation of travelers.

While the revolving restaurant’s closure marks the end of an era at the end of this month, its legacy remains woven into Penang’s tourism history, a reminder of a time when dining met discovery and every meal came with a view worth remembering.

  1. It’s such a shame to see it go. I remember trying to get a table there – the views were incredible, and it felt like a really special place.
