Penang has once again made Malaysia proud, earning international acclaim as one of the Best Islands in Southeast Asia by none other than National Geographic!

Our beloved island ranked second overall, taking home the title of “Best Island for Food” — a well-deserved nod from the iconic magazine known for celebrating geography, culture, and exploration.

National Geographic described Penang as “a Southeast Asian culinary escape that doesn’t get much better,” highlighting George Town’s UNESCO World Heritage charm, vibrant street food culture, and the island’s unique blend of Chinese, Indian, and Malay influences. From humble hawker stalls to Michelin-starred dining, Penang continues to delight every kind of foodie.

Penang State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy, YB Wong Hon Wai, welcomed the recognition, saying it perfectly captures what makes Penang so special — “our world-famous food, rich culture, and warm, friendly people.”

Leading the regional ranking was Koh Chang, Thailand, named “Best for Beaches.” Other islands that made the prestigious list include:

  • Cat Ba, Vietnam – Best for Adventure
  • Komodo, Indonesia – Best for Wildlife
  • Panay, Philippines – Best for Festivals
  • Isla Verde, Philippines – Best for Scuba
  • Java, Indonesia – Best for Temples
  • Don Khong, Laos – Best for Cycling

With its unbeatable mix of history, flavours and hospitality, Penang continues to serve up unforgettable experiences — one delicious bite and breathtaking view at a time.
