The spirit of Deepavali lit up early for 70 children from Shan Children’s Home and Ramakrishna Ashram, thanks to a heartfelt celebration hosted by the Lions Club of George Town at the North Malaysia Malayali Samajam along Greenlane.
The event was a lively affair filled with laughter, music, and warm smiles as the children were welcomed with open arms by club president Dato Gulab Mahatam Rai and his dedicated team of Lions.
Also showing their support were Penang Island City Council Mayor Dato A. Rajendran and North Kerala Samajam chairperson Madam Sumathi Nair, who joined hands with the Lions in making the day memorable.

True to the club’s long-standing tradition of celebrating Deepavali with the community, this year’s event once again focused on bringing joy, hope, and a sense of belonging to children in need. Over a hearty festive lunch, the children were treated not just to delicious food but also to cash gifts and games — with a lively deejay on hand who got everyone laughing and dancing.
In his welcoming speech, Dato Gulab reminded the young guests of the deeper meaning of Deepavali, the Festival of Lights.
“As we approach Deepavali, it’s important to remember that this is more than a festival — it’s a celebration of hope,” he said. “Life can sometimes be tough, but just like the lights that shine through the darkness, there is always hope, always a chance for a brighter tomorrow.”
He encouraged the children to believe in their inner strength: “Each one of you has a special spark, a unique talent, and endless potential. Never stop learning, never stop dreaming, and never stop believing in yourselves.”

Dato Gulab also acknowledged the club’s tradition of community service, which spans over 45 years, and gave special thanks to event coordinators OC Thomas and Por for their hard work behind the scenes.
Adding to the warmth of the occasion was the presence of fellow Lions Club members from across the region — including Medan, Alor Star, Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur, Butterworth, and Penang Island — who came together in the true spirit of unity and service.
For the children, the event was more than just a celebration. It was a reminder that they are seen, supported, and cherished — not just during festive seasons, but always.
