Penang has been given the rare honour of hosting the World Research Travel Conference (WRTC) 2024, from November 3 to 7, 2024 at the Setia SPICE Convention Centre here.
This is the first time the conference is being held outside of China. The organisers had earlier considered locations like Sabah, Sarawak, Selangor, Langkaiw before deciding on Penang.
The conference organised by the World Research Travel Organisation (WRTO) is also in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia.
The gathering will bring together global experts, educators, industry leaders and travel professionals to explore the future of research travel, enhance collaboration, and promote sustainable growth in this dynamic sector.
Present to announce the WRTC 2024 in Komtar was State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy, YB Wong Hon Wai accompanied by Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) chief executive officer, Ashwin Gunasekeran.
Also present was Dato Sri Dr Adbul Khani Daud, WRTC 2024 organising chairman, Ms Mint Leong Hooi Min, Secretary General of WRTC Malaysia Chapter and Ms Liang Wern Ling, Secretary General of WRTC Singapore Branch among tourism industry stakeholders.
Wong said that hosting the World Research Travel Conference aligns seamlessly with Penang 2030 vision.
“As we strive towards a future that is sustainable, innovative and inclusive, we recognize the critical role of education and cultural exchange in achieving these goals. This conference, with its focus on research travel, presents a unique opportunity to merge tourism with education and culture, fostering greater understanding and collaboration among the global community.
“Penang, with its UNESCO World Heritage Site in George Town and the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve at Penang Hill, offers a unique backdrop for this event. This mix of historical charm and natural beauty strengthens Penang’s position as a key destination for cultural and experiential tourism”, said Wong in his opening remarks..
Meanwhile, Ashwin said that it is with great pride that he extends his gratitude to the World Research Travel Organization (WRTO) for choosing Penang as the host destination for the World Research Travel Conference 2024.
“This is a momentous occasion, as it marks the very first time this event is being held outside of China.
“This year’s conference is set to be a remarkable one, with over 1,200 delegates and 20 universities participating from around the globe. These institutions will engage in meaningful
discussions, collaborations, and insights that will shape the future of research travel, an evolving and increasingly significant sector within the global travel and education industries.
“The importance of research travel cannot be overstated. For destinations like Penang, this form of travel brings unique value that goes beyond traditional tourism. It creates a platform for
knowledge exchange, it strengthens global academic partnerships, and it encourages sustainable tourism development”, shared Ashwin.
He also added that by merging education with travel, research travel allows participants to experience a destination in a profound way, deeply connecting them to the local culture, history and environment while enhancing their academic and intellectual pursuits. The state stand to benefit an Estimated Economic Impact (EEI) of RM9.76 million by hosting the event.,
More than 600 delegates and scholars from China are expected to make their presence while Singapore is sending a team from Changi Airport and also from the Resort World Sentosa at the conference.
