Believed to be among the oldest Gurdwaras in the country, the Wadda Gurdwara Sahib in Georgetown,  Penang received a donation of RM100,000 from Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow yesterday.

It was more meaningful as April 14 is also the celebration of Vasakhi, Tamil New Year and Songkran.

Present was State Exco for Housing, Local Government, Town and Country Planning YB Jagdeep Singh Deo and committee members of the Gurduwara.

“We will continue with our assistance in all places of worship, including non-Islamic places of worship, whereby todate we have approved 209 projects at a cost of RM8,791,059.44.

“We are very happy that the Penang Chief Minister himself has taken time to make it a point to attend today’s celebrations.

“The community were surprised with his announcement of a RM100,000.00 contribution to assist in the restoration project of the 122-year-old historic building.

“I will also contribute an additional RM 50,000.00 to this project. I would like to thank other donors as well and we will continue with this throughout the State on Vasakhi Day,” said Jagdeep.

He also added that there will be a new annex to the present building while there will be a new Gurduwara in Bayan Baru, a new Seberang Perai Gurdwara and other work at all other Gurdwaras.

He stressed that the State Government will continue to assist  all other places of worship in Penang.
